Maintenance Tips for Oil Paintings

Nothing is really cheap anymore in this age and time and if you have decided that collecting oil paintings is one pastime you would never be able to forego then I trust you’re willing to go that extra mile – give or take an inch or two – to ensure that your oil paintings are properly cared for.
Nothing is really cheap anymore in this age and time and if you have decided that collecting oil paintings is one pastime you would never be able to forego then I trust you’re willing to go that extra mile – give or take an inch or two – to ensure that your oil paintings are properly cared for.

The happiness that the beauty of oil paintings stirs in our hearts is undeniable but this happiness may be short-lived if you don’t take care of your oil paintings the way it deserves. Compared to other styles of paintings such as water colors or black and white sketches, there is something about the richness of oil paintings that make it seems more vivid and real than others.

If you want to be able to appreciate your oil paintings throughout the years to come, do keep in mind the following dos and don’ts that we’re about to give you.

Do keep away insects from your oil paintings. There are several types of insects who can eat away the beautiful frames of your oil paintings or live on the surface of the painting itself. If you know what’s best for your painting, frequently check on the backs of your oil paintings and have it cleaned regularly to ensure that no insects would make the mistake of living there.

Don’t let excessive humidity and light exposure do damage to your oil paintings. You can prevent such damage to your oil paintings from occurring by making sure that drapes are completely closed to ward off sunlight and that the oil paintings are kept in areas that do not have high levels of humidity or experience extreme fluctuations in temperature.

If your fingers are fairly itching to clean the dirt, dust and grime that has attached itself to the surface of your oil paintings, please restrain yourself. Let the professionals do what they do best. But just in case you can’t afford to retain their services in a regular basis, be very careful with how you clean and what solutions or equipment you use for your oil paintings.

Do always use brand new and dirt free cotton cloths when blotting out grime. Do make sure that the brush you use for cleaning has gentle bristles, rather than hard ones that could just be another cause of damage to your oil paintings. If in doubt with the cleaning solutions you’re planning to use, do consult with the experts first.
